I believe everyone deserves a beautiful portrait of themselves.
I photograph intentional women and their loved ones.
Stay beautiful, Camilla
My great-grandma was a photographer in her own right. When she died in 2010 I took possession of her negatives and have found many treasures. This project is a juxtaposition of her photos and my recent ones taken in 2019 and 2020. They each show a glimpse into summers with extended family in Barro Preto, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. It is a visual family narrative that spans over 50 years.
Barro Preto is what the oldies call Jardim Atlântico, a tiny beach town in the southernmost state of Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul. There is a family —my own—that has been spending summers there for more than 50 years now. Rio Grande do Sul is the land of the gaúcho, drinker of mate and lover of beef. It is also the place most German immigrants settled in the 1800s, when a big wave of emigrants left Europe for a fresh start at the American continent. My family, like many others in the area, keeps its German roots alive and it also fully embraces the gaúcho conviviality, where chimarrão (mate) is shared by all in a circle of union and togetherness. This is a curation of my late great-grandma’s photographs that she took while she was alive, as well as recent ones I make every year I go there. Hers on the left, mine on the right. It truly is an intimate look into extended family life in Southern Brazil.
